The drug’s maker, Pfizer, said in a filing Tuesday that it was seeking approval to market the drug in the United States.

Kelly/Getty Images“I am concerned about these potentially fatal reactions to Viagra,” said Dr. Kelly, the lead investigator for the FDA’s ongoing clinical trial for Sildenafil, which is the first of its kind to treat Sildenafil-associated pulmonary hypertension. The drug is currently in phase 2 clinical trials for other heart conditions, including Raynaud’s phenomenon and pulmonary edema. The drugs work by relaxing blood vessels in the lungs, allowing blood to flow into the lungs when the heart is beating.
“We don’t know how common the reaction is, but it’s very rare,” Dr. Kelly said. “We are concerned about this.”
The FDA’s new drug label for Sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, was released in September, but didn’t say whether that’s included in the drug label for Viagra.
Viagra’s maker, Pfizer, has said that it is reviewing all regulatory filings with the FDA, including one in which the drug’s label was revised in September.
Viagra is available over the counter at most pharmacies and is approved for sale at most drugstores. It is the third prescription-drug combination drug in the United States to be approved for sale without a prescription.
AstraZeneca’s Viagra, which works by relaxing blood vessels in the lungs, is the most recently approved by the FDA for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. In March, the drug was in phase 2 clinical trials for Raynaud’s phenomenon, or the sudden loss of blood in the groin area. Raynaud’s phenomenon is a condition in which the arteries from the heart are narrow and blood vessels from the brain narrow. It is also a type of allergic reaction to nitrates, drugs used to treat angina, chest pain and other chest pain symptoms. The heart, blood vessels and brain are also affected.
The most recent FDA drug label for Sildenafil was in December. The label changes were made after the first two trials, which began in June, began in November and have been in effect since January. Pfizer, which makes Viagra, is not disclosing the drugs’ label changes.
Dr. Kelly said he is concerned about the increased risk of serious allergic reactions, such as a sudden onset of anaphylactic shock, which occurs when an immune response causes a body to become less responsive to an inflammatory response. It is possible that the reaction could also occur if the drugs are not used correctly. He said some patients may feel faint or have difficulty breathing, especially if they are taking the drugs with nitrates. Patients taking nitrates should be told to wait at least five days before taking the drugs.
